Belarusian Christian Democracy Party hails ban on occultism ads

1213697847_exstrasensZapretWednesday 18 June 2008 21:48 The bill would ban ads of hypnotizers, mediums, psychics, astrologers and magic practitioners, as well as ads of psychological counseling services unless such services are provided by a state organization or for free.
“The government has finally given an ear to the public opinion,” Alyaksey Shein, a leader of the party, told BelaPAN.

The politician said that the BCD had launched a campaign against psychics in 2007. "We have sent multiple requests for banning ads of occult services to various governmental agencies. We have been heard and this is very good," Mr. Shein said.

All Protestant communities existing in Belarus and the Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church have backed the campaign.

Mr. Shein said that the party would push for easier rules for addiction rehabilitation centers. "People who contacted fortune tellers and psychics did this because of troubles in their life. They have psychological problems, for instance substance abuse problems. That's why we will be asking the government to make the operation of rehabs, including those at religious institutions, as easy as possible," he noted.

Mr. Shein warned that BCD activists would continue monitoring TV ads to make sure that no occult services are advertised.

The unregistered Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) party has welcomed a bill banning the advertising of occult services that passed the House of Representatives on June 17.
