Christian Union party of the Netherlands condemns Russian invasion in Georgia

logokleinTuesday 12 August 2008 20:54 The Christian Union is relieved that Russia seems to have ended its military operation. "The violence Russia was using, went outside international law and was out of proportion" says Joel Voordewind, Member of the Lower House of Parliament for the Christian Union.

Russia should have brought the issue of South-Ossetia to the Security Council. By also engaging in military actions and bombardments outside South-Ossetia and aimed at civilian targets such as the harbor of Poti, Russia is in flagrant breach of the laws of war. The Christian Union asserts that Russia should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

The Christian Union supports the efforts of the EU to reach a peace agreement and hopes that an agreement regarding the secessionist regions of South-Ossetia and Abchasia can be reached soon.

The Christian Union is saddened by the passing of Dutch camera man Stan Storimans in Georgia and expresses its sympathy with the family, especially his wife and two children.
