'The Christians' fail to enter Austrian parliament, but going strong

200px-DC_2008_election_poster_1Monday 29 September 2008 15:24 In Sunday's election for the federal parliament of Austria a new party called 'The Christians' competed for the first time. They had allready participated in state elections in Lower Austria and Tirol. The party did not enter the parliament but affirms that it will keep promoting Christian politics.

'The Christians' (Die Christen Partei or DCP) got 27,993 votes or 0.63 % of the vote. Compared to other parties that participated in the federal election for the first time, such as the Animal Rights Party and the Left party, this is a reasonable result.

The party states that although this result is clearly not what they had hoped for, they will continue their efforts. The party is for example still gathering signatures for a petitioning for a 'Child and family'-referendum, concerning tax cuts for families with children, an allowance for parents that stay stay home to raise their children and an increase of the assistance to families that require it. Some for 8,000 signatures are needed to enter the petition for a referendum and some 4,000 have allready been collected by the party.

ECPYN encourages 'The Christians' to continue their efforts, secretary general Jonathan van Tongeren states: "There are clear opportunities for an explicitely Christian-social party in Austria, especially now that ÖVP leader Molterer has so bluntly asserted in public that he is not interested in the social teachings of the church (1)."
