Swiss Youth Committee against the legalization of cannabis

jugendohnehanf3Monday 27 October 2008 17:00 A cross partisan committee "Yes to the youth - No to the cannabis initiative" consisting of young politicians of the liberal party, the conservatives and the two Christian parties EVP and EDU presented their case against legalizing the consumption and production of
cannabis.

The committee stands up for young people who assume responsibility, who mature to adults of integrity and thereby contribute to a healthy society. "Stoned youths however, lose out on their life" states the committee. "They endanger themselves, their future, their relatives and become a burden for the whole society. That's not OK!"

Samuel Kullmann (EDU) appealed against adjusting laws and values to the ever-changing mood of society. "To give up on our dream of a drug-free society would be a betrayal of the youth." Andrea Geissbühler (MP, Conservatives) warned about the fatal consequences of drugs and commendatory mentioned the decision of the national youth parliament against the cannabis initiative. Christian Wasserfallen (MP, Liberals) tore up the arguments put forth by the cannabis advocates:
"We must not be indifferent to anybody's misery out of a so-called 'generous' conception of tolerance." Lilian Studer (chairwoman Young EVP) concluded the reasoning in giving perspectives on what to do in case the initiative hopefully falls short of a majority: "We need better educational advertising! Quick and uncomplicated fines are more efficient than tedious criminal proceedings."

Recent polls have shown a 45% to 42% lead for the initiative's supporters. However there's a month of campaigning left and the committee is confident to win the popular vote on November 30th.
